EMDR

Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR), was developed in 1987 by Francine Shapiro and has quickly achieved prominence as a “state of the art” treatment for both acute and post traumatic stress disorders. It has other tremendously effective applications for anxiety, depression, anger, sleep disturbance, and relapse prevention. EMDR can also be successfully utilized with children, adolescents, and adults.

Bill Solz has been trained and certified in using EMDR since 1996. During this period of time he has been a primary referral source for various agencies and employee assistance programs where he has had an opportunity to utilize his skills to promote the healing of many traumatized individuals. These have included people either directly or indirectly affected by the World Trade Center Strategy, several air and Long Island Rail Road disasters, as well as victims of physical and sexual abuse and assault, in addition to those who have suffered motor vehicle trauma.

EMDR is generally regarded as being a quicker healing treatment modality than cognitive behavioral therapy. Some of its hallmarks include the following:
  1. Accelerated Information Processing Network
  2. Direct targeting of trauma leading to its becoming desensitized
  3. Focusing on discomfort in body
  4. Full verbal disclosure is not necessary
  5. Utilization of bilateral stimulation to promote healing
  6. It follows an eight phase model
  7. The achievement of permanency in that once the upset is fully and completely processed it will no longer bother you
